Racial Injustice Fatigue
Whew. It can all be so much to take in and handle for many. Whether it be from personal experience of living and existing as a black or brown person whose humanity is often not reflected in their daily interactions with strangers. Or it may come from watching black bodies and black life being extinguished in video loops on television and social media.
It can all be too much for many. And that is okay. That is normal. That is human. That is showing empathy. That is identifying with the pain of others. I define it as Racial Injustice Fatigue= A feeling of overwhelming anger, outrage, powerlessness, and immobility. Sometimes it takes your breath away. Sometimes you may want to hide from it all or shut others out.
Here are some things to know/do that may help to empower you:
You are not alone
Your feelings are valid
You can create change on an individual and community level
Change is possible
Unplug from news/social media for a bit
Spend time with a friend/loved one to boost your mood
Get involved and/or volunteer with an organization that addresses social justice issues
